Understanding your litter problem

The NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) has developed an easy-to-use Local Litter Check. This is available to the community, councils and other land managers, free of charge, to help you understand and design solutions for your local litter problem.

The Local Litter Check

The Local Litter Check is designed to help you gather evidence about what contributes to litter behaviour in your local area, at sites such as parks, beaches and bus stops. It leads you through key information you will need to know: What is littered? Who uses the area? What bins are present and is the area clean?

The answers to these questions will help you build a plan of action to tackle litter. The kit includes easy-to-use survey sheets and forms for recording information. Once your project is underway you can use the Local Litter Check to track your progress and measure your success.
