In February 2013, the NSW Government announced the five-year $465.7 million Waste Less Recycle More initiative in response to the findings of an independent review of the Waste and Environment Levy. The Waste and Environment Levy is legislated under the Protection of the Environment Operations Act 1997 which requires licensed waste facilities in NSW to pay a contribution for each tonne of waste received for disposal at the facility. The levy is the key policy used to drive waste avoidance and resource recovery by providing an economic incentive to reduce waste disposal and stimulate investment and innovation in resource recovery technologies. The Waste Less Recycle More initiative represent the refocussing of waste levy funding to support new and innovative waste and recycling programs that will deliver long-term change.
