Review of regional forest agreements

An important element of each of the NSW regional forest agreements (RFAs) is the requirement for a 5-yearly review of the performance of each RFA. The purpose of the review is to assess the progress of the agreements against established milestones, and includes:

  • the extent to which milestones and obligations have been met, including management of the National Estate
  • the results of monitoring of sustainability indicators
  • invite public comment on the performance of the agreement.

The review of RFAs is separate from the review of NSW forest agreements and integrated forestry operations approvals.

Each five-yearly review involves three NSW RFAs:

  • RFA for the Eden region
  • RFA for the North East region
  • RFA for the Southern region.

More information on the RFA regions can be found here on the Australian Government Department of Agriculture website.

Second and third 5-yearly reviews

In December 2016, the NSW and Australian governments signed a Scoping Agreement  for the review of progress with implementation of the New South Wales Regional Forest Agreements (PDF 939KB). The governments are jointly preparing the Report of Progress with Implementation, which will be placed on public exhibition for a minimum of 8 weeks in 2017.

An Independent Reviewer will be appointed to review the report and consider any public submissions. The Independent Reviewer’s report will include findings and recommendations, and will be tabled in the Australian Parliament.

First 5-yearly review

As part of the first 5-yearly review, A Draft Report on Progress with Implementation of the New South Wales RFAs (PDF 2.5MB) was placed on public exhibition in 2009.

An independent assessor reviewed the draft report and public submissions and produced the Final Report on Progress with Implementation of NSW Regional Forest Agreements: Report of Independent Assessor (PDF 444KB), which was tabled in the Australian Parliament on 15 March 2010.

The Joint Australian and New South Wales Government Response to the Final Report on Progress with Implementation of the NSW Regional Forest Agreements: Report of the Independent Assessor (PDF 2.3MB) was tabled in the House of Representatives of the Australian Parliament on 30 October 2014.
