Tony Chappel appointed new CEO of NSW EPA
Following an extensive recruitment process, Tony Chappel has been appointed as Chief Executive Officer of the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA).
NSW Environment Minister James Griffin said Mr Chappel was the ideal candidate, with strong experience in highly regulated industries and a commitment to the environment.
“Tony joins the EPA as it steps up to tackle some of the toughest environmental challenges, from local pollution issues and waste management, to environmentally sustainable resource management and climate change,” Mr Griffin said.
“His experience and long history of working in the public and private sectors will serve the authority well and ensure it remains a strong, respected and independent environmental regulator.
“The EPA’s Acting CEO Jacqueleine Moore has shown true leadership and dedication to the organisation while she’s been in the role, and I thank her for her efforts.”
Mr Chappel will join the EPA after three years as Executive General Manager, Corporate Affairs, Legal Risk and Governance and Chief External Affairs Officer at Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO). His role included responsibility for regulatory strategy and policy, as well as strategic policy development across state and federal governments and market bodies.
He has a master’s degree in Environmental Change and Management from University of Oxford and a degree in Environmental Technology from Imperial College, London.
EPA Chair Rayne de Gruchy welcomed the announcement and thanked EPA Executive Director Legal and Corporate Jacqueleine Moore for her work and dedication as Acting CEO for the past five months while recruitment was underway.
“We’re delighted to welcome Tony Chappel to lead the EPA. His breadth of experience is ideally suited to lead on the critical environment protection issues that are so important to our communities, industry and government,” Ms de Gruchy said.
The EPA is the state’s primary environmental regulator. It is an independent statutory authority that partners with business, government and the community to reduce pollution and waste, protect human health and prevent degradation of the environment.
