Ten billion and counting
The people of NSW have good reason to celebrate the incredible success of its container deposit scheme, Return and Earn. The scheme recently hit the milestone of recycling 10 billion containers returned through its return point network.
The NSW Government began this initiative in collaboration with Exchange for Change and TOMRA Cleanaway and has transformed the recycling landscape with environmental and commercial wins.
Since it started in December 2017, Return and Earn has revolutionised the outlook on recycling, urging communities to see waste as a valuable resource. Through a network of 614 easily accessible return points across the state, people have enthusiastically engaged in the circular economy, guaranteeing a steady flow of recyclable materials back into production.
The impressive $1 billion refunded to the people of NSW has helped families with daily expenses and supporting community initiatives. The scheme has also proven to be a beacon for charitable efforts, generating over $47 million in donations and return point hosting fees for many different causes.
But the impact of Return and Earn goes far beyond financial gains. With an impressive 54% reduction in drink container litter (from pre-scheme levels), the environment has been protected from pollution, while more than 920,000 tonnes of materials have been diverted from landfills, conserving energy and water. Minister for the Environment, Penny Sharpe, lauded the scheme's achievements, saying it was the equivalent of taking 450,000 cars off the road for a year in CO2 emissions saved.
With the continued backing and involvement of the community, the scheme will continue making an impact, cementing its status as a pioneering model for circular economy initiatives nationwide.
