Connecting community on Warringah Freeway upgrade air quality
A new air quality monitoring project on the Lower North Shore will provide the community with local air quality information.
We are leading this new project, which was developed in response to community concern about air quality impacts from the construction of the Warringah Freeway Upgrade.
Eleven air quality monitors have been installed. The main monitor is located at the construction support site at Cammeray Park and 10 portable monitors have been installed along a transect from Wollstonecraft through to Middle Harbour. These monitors are at varying distances from the construction works.
The monitors were installed before construction works started in May. This means that we will have 'before and after' data for a range of air quality measures including dust particles (PM10 and PM2.5 continuously), sulphur dioxide, carbon monoxide, ozone, oxides of nitrogen, visibility, and meteorology (wind speed, wind direction, ambient temperature, and relative humidity).
Both the main monitor and portable monitors collect and report data in real time here that the community can access.
We have worked closely with atmospheric scientists in the Department of Planning and Environment, North Sydney Council and the Department of Education to get this project underway. We have also heard from local community groups and residents who have shared their concerns and feedback with us.
In June, the project team hosted two community drop-in sessions for community at the Coal Loader Centre for Sustainability, in Waverton.
