What is the State of our Environment - major report released
We have published our latest snapshot of the health of the NSW environment. The NSW State of Environment provides significant data and a fantastic resource for policy makers, environment groups researchers, schools, unis and educators.
The latest and online State of the Environment report for NSW holds a trove of useful and accessible data
Available every three years, the State of Environment (SoE) is an interactive website that outlines the health of our environment – including land, air, water, ecosystems and urban environment – at a state-wide level across 22 topics with data contributed from 11 government bodies.
Positive results recorded in the 2021 report include a drop in greenhouse gas emissions and an increase in the size of national parks and nature reserves.
“The report provides the community with definitive information to understand how the NSW environment’s health is tracking,” Acting CEO Jacqueleine Moore said.
“We’re proud to report the community has less litterbugs - with a drop in littering of 43% over the past six years and 64% of waste was diverted for recycling in 2019-20.
“The report also captures the impact of the devastating 2019-20 bushfires and the drought, which reduced native animal numbers, and damaged water quality and air quality, and top soil.
“Other challenges identified include increasing clearing of native vegetation, poor health of river systems, and increasing threats to animal populations on land and water.”
The latest report is the 11th since 1993 and the first to include First Nations perspectives and climate change.
“We can see the report’s potential as a dynamic teaching resource and will pursue this development with environmental educators,” Jacqueleine added.
The report is on a web platform and has interactive charts and data, it’s easy to use and will be updated online as new data is reported from contributing agencies.
