The Protection from Harmful Radiation Regulation 2013 provides for the appointment of radiation safety officers (RSOs) and radiation safety committees (RSCs) in workplaces where ionising radiation apparatus or radioactive substances are used.
The function of an RSO or RSC is to advise and assist an employer or organisation to fulfil their obligations under the Protection from Harmful Radiation Act 1990 and the Regulation to protect employees, members of the public and the environment from the harmful effects of radiation.
Radiation Guideline 5 – Recommendations for Radiation Safety Officers and Radiation Safety Committees (PDF 194KB) is a non-mandatory guideline for employers who currently employ an RSO or are considering doing so.
