Kanwal General Store and Fuel Supplies

Kanwal General Store and Fuel Supplies, at 68 Craigie Avenue, Kanwal, is contaminated due to fuel leaks and spills associated with the operation of the service station over a long period of time.

The EPA has regulated contamination on the site and the adjacent land at 70 Craigie Avenue, Kanwal under the Contaminated Land Management Act 1997 (CLM Act) since December 2018 when the land was declared significantly contaminated.

Following notices and subsequent court action, Zoya Investments Pty Ltd, the property owner at the time, assessed the contamination, fixed faulty fuel infrastructure and developed a Remediation Action Plan to clean up the site.

Impact on the community

Surrounding properties have access to town water which is safe to drink. In addition, the potential for owners and the community to be exposed to contaminated groundwater is considered low.

We are working with surrounding property owners and the local community to support further investigations.

What the EPA is doing
