Onshore gas industry

The EPA is the lead regulator responsible for compliance and enforcement of all conditions of approval for onshore gas activities in NSW, except for work health and safety matters.

These conditions include strict controls which industry must comply to:

  • protect water, land and air and reduce noise impacts
  • manage waste
  • manage the use of chemicals
  • manage rehabilitation and biodiversity
  • manage infrastructure and requirements for insurance and assurance
  • require community consultation.

The EPA works with other government agencies, gas operators, and communities to ensure the onshore gas industry meets their statutory environmental responsibilities in NSW.

There are currently four active gas operations in NSW with two of these in the process of being decommissioned.

The EPA maintains an active compliance program to protect the environment from impacts from the exploitation of gas resources.

The EPA works with other government agencies involved in the administration, assessment, and approval of gas projects to effectively manage onshore gas projects in NSW.

The EPA prepares a range of legislative amendments, policies, guidelines, and reports that may call for, or require, community involvement, engagement and consultation.

The NSW Government has a financial framework in place designed to protect against future environmental liabilities that may arise from gas projects in NSW.
