Most-littered items

The chart below shows the litter item types recorded by the KLIS in 2022–23, by volume.

Other food packages ​(e.g. soy fish bottles), water bottles (under 1 litre), and flavoured water, soft drink bottles (over 1 litre)​ are the top 3 most-littered item types, accounting for almost 30% of all litter volume.

The top 10 individual items account for 58% of all litter by volume.

Litter by category

The chart below shows the litter categories recorded by the KLIS in 2022–23, by volume.

Takeaway and beverage​ and miscellaneous plastic​ categories account for almost 72% of all litter by volume.

Litter by material

The chart below shows the material composition of the litter recorded by the KLIS in 2022–23, by volume. Almost 70% of the litter was plastic, compared to 87% in 2021–22. The next-largest category was paper/cardboard (12%), followed by metal (8%).
