Asbestos in mulch investigation

Our asbestos in mulch investigation into the supply chain is now complete and the EPA has commenced prosecutions of three companies and one individual in the Land and Environment Court.

The EPA launched the investigation in January 2024 in response to the discovery of asbestos in mulch in Rozelle Parklands. During the investigation over 300 sites were inspected, with 79 sites identified as having used contaminated mulch.

The NSW Government established an Asbestos Taskforce to co-ordinate government agencies to assist in prioritising sites considered of highest risk to the public.

The Taskforce supported the EPA’s investigations on the ground with crews from Fire and Rescue NSW, SafeWork, Public Works and the Natural Resources Access Regulator.

The EPA can confirm that Rozelle Parklands, all schools, hospitals and healthcare facilities which were found to have asbestos in mulch have been cleaned up and re-opened.
