HMAS Albatross

The Commonwealth Department of Defence (Defence) is investigating PFAS from the HMAS Albatross (Albatross) in Nowra after PFAS was found at and around the base in 2016.

In November 2017 Defence released the results of a Detailed Site Investigation (DSI) into PFAS from Albatross. The DSI found elevated levels of PFAS in soil, groundwater and surface water on the base, and surface water and groundwater outside the base.

The EPA has spoken with a small number of landowners to discuss the results, to identify ways they may have come into contact with PFAS and to provide them with advice.

In June 2018 Defence released its Human Health Risk Assessment (addendum) for Albatross. The NSW Government PFAS Taskforce has reviewed the Human Health Risk Assessment and has determined that there are no updates to the existing precautionary advice that has already been given to affected residents and the community.

The NSW Government will continue to work closely with Defence, to closely monitor the progress of Defence’s investigation into PFAS,and to keep the community informed.

Advice for local fishers

The NSW Government has released precautionary advice for select fish species caught in Currambene Creek and the Shoalhaven River.

Albatross is understood to be the source of PFAS in Currambene Creek, and a source of PFAS in the Shoalhaven River.
