EPA publishes results of investigation into metals in Cadia water tanks
The NSW EPA has published two reports following investigations into metals and sediments in domestic tank water around the Cadia gold mine.
The reports form part of our wider investigation into Cadia’s mining operations and licence compliance.
Executive Director of Regulatory Practices & Services Steve Beaman said the reports outline results from tank water and sediment samples collected by the EPA between June and August this year.
“In total the EPA collected 281 water samples from tanks and kitchen taps, and 41 samples were analysed from tank sediment in the region surrounding the Cadia gold mine,” Mr Beaman said.
“All samples were tested for metals of concern to the community, including lead, cadmium, nickel, selenium, copper, arsenic and zinc.
“The vast majority of results from the kitchen tap samples showed metal concentrations below the health-based guidelines.
“The results of the water and sediment investigations were consistent with other studies of rainwater tanks across Australia.
“It highlights the importance of regular cleaning and maintenance of rainwater tanks as outlined by NSW Health.”
The EPA’s Independent Expert Panel reviewed and provided input to the reports and advised that the conclusions are supported by the data.
Mr Beaman said the EPA’s investigation is ongoing and includes multiple lines of inquiry.
“We are now progressing lead isotope analysis of the sediment and comparing them to soil and samples from the tailings dam and emissions from Vent Rise 8 to help identify the source of lead found in water tank sediment samples,” Mr Beaman said.
“We are also installing an extensive air quality monitoring program, which includes high volume air samplers that allow metals in air to be analysed.
“We will continue working with the community and Cadia to ensure the mine is operating in compliance with its environmental obligations.”
