The NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) is seeking community feedback on its statutory five-yearly review of Newmont's Cadia mine Environment Protection Licence.

The EPA uses environment protection licences to regulate dust emissions from mines, as well as noise, water management, land contamination and waste.

Community concern has previously been raised over the Cadia mine's operations following a series of dust emission incidents, including failure to monitor air quality at the mining site, which saw prosecution action commenced against previous owners Newcrest for alleged breaches of the clean air laws.

EPA Executive Director Regulatory Operations, Jason Gordon said that community feedback for this review will be crucial for improving current regulation practices.

"We appreciate how keen the community is to see positive changes around air quality monitoring and for appropriate environmental controls to be in place," Mr Gordon said.

"We encourage the community to partake in this consultation to help inform any future licence obligations.

"We want every mine site in NSW to be fit for purpose and reflect best practice air quality control and operating measures."

The EPA will consider all feedback received as part of the review and will work through any subsequent licence enhancements in a staged way.

The EPA investigations into Cadia's mining operations and licence compliance are ongoing.

Public consultation for the review of the Cadia Mine licence will open on 11 March 2024 until 22 April 2024. To learn more and have your say, go to Cadia mine licence review.
