Ampol investigated PFAS (per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances) contamination associated with the historical use of fire-fighting foams at its Kurnell Fuel Terminal.
Ongoing PFAS sampling has been undertaken by Ampol since 2018 to help determine the extent of the contamination and any ways local residents might come into contact with these chemicals.
This monitoring has shown that PFAS continues to be present both on and offsite and continues to migrate off site via ground water. Concentrations appear to be broadly stable or decreasing over time. Ampol is required to undertake onsite remediation work to reduce the risk of off site PFAS migration.
Recent monitoring was undertaken by Ampol at 13 residential bores in the Kurnell area. Residents have been provided information as to how to use groundwater, including bore water on their property.
The EPA will continue to oversee the work undertaken by Ampol which includes ongoing sampling, monitoring and onsite remediation to ensure a robust approach continues to be applied to PFAS contamination, and that the community receives information in a timely manner.
