How the Hunter River Salinity Trading Scheme works
Salty water is only discharged when there is a lot of low salt, fresh water in the river. Every 2 years, a credit auction is conducted, where people can trade their salt discharge credits. People can only discharge the amount that their credits allow.

Salt credits: Hunter River Salinity Trading Scheme
Every 2 years, 200 new salt credits are created to replace expired ones. Credits have a lifespan of 10 years.

The Hunter River drains the largest coastal catchment in New South Wales, covering about 22,000 square kilometres. Salt occurs naturally, but is increased by human industry which has lead to the raising of salt levels in the river.
